Article: 2-13-08 "Should Christians Sit Out The Election This Fall?"
I have been watching TV commentators and listening to conservatives on Radio for weeks now and I have to say that I am a little more than concerned. The founder of Focus on the Family said the other day that "if McCain is our Republican candidate, that I will probably sit this election out for the first time in my life."
Now I have to say, I am not a McCain fan. To be honest, I was not a Romney or Huckabee fan either. No one really appealed to me this year. But I have to say when I look at the other side, there is nothing there but confusion, false promises, liberal agendas, and I could go on. The thought of Clinton or Obama sitting in the Oval office causes me great concern. I am sure every Christian and Conservative in this nation agrees with me. But with that being said, I cannot for the life of me see the benefit of all of us disgruntled Christian Conservatives sitting out this election. And to be honest, I do not know who I am going to vote for. But I do know who I am "NOT" going to vote for. So part of the decision is made.
So what are we to do? There are several things to consider as Christians and Conservatives (which should be one and the same). First of all, we are in a time of war. With the rise of Muslim extremists, we cannot afford to let down our guard on terrorism. Our President has not been right on many things, but on the war, we have to agree. We are in danger and we need to put someone in office that will be "Pro-military defense" and pro-aggressive in the fight on terrorism. We need someone with both experience and backbone and a level head. Although McCain may not be the Conservatives' Conservative, he does stand pretty much where we do on the war on terrorism and possibly during an act of aggression, he would be experienced enough to make good decisions that will keep us safe (at least moreso than our friends on the other side of the aisle).
Second, we must keep in mind that our economy is a very important issue. Republicans differ on the economy. There are so many different thoughts on what should be done. But one thing is true, we cannot afford to be over burdened with the taxing, spending, handout programs of the liberals. We are just about to our limit of taxation. We need more relief by more growth, not more tax burden. I am not sure what our Republican candidate will do, but I am sure what the other side will do and it will not be pretty.
Last of all, we must use some conservative common sense. We cannot afford to take a chance of sitting out this fall, letting "the liberals" get in the White House, and hope that things get so bad that after four years, this nation will be ready for our conservative candidate to take office like it did in the days of Reagan. One thing is very much different now. We do not have a Reagan. So that idea will not work. And besides, can you imagine where we will be in four years of Clinton and Obama? That is a nighmare.
I in good conscience cannot recommend anyone this year as a good choice for President. I am my family have talked and prayed and we will be at the poles in November. We do not know yet who we will vote for, but we will vote. I recommend that you do the same. It is that philosophy of staying at home that has gotten us to this point. Conservatives have the voice. We can make a difference. We may not like our options, but I believe we can work with a "McCain" must easier than a "Clinton or Obama". So let's take our stand and make our choice and do the best with what we have. These are our options. I don't like them either, but it is all we have. So vote, vote, vote, (only one time, not like them!). Don't stay home. Then after the vote and we have put our candidate in, let's work hard to move things in the direction we need. We can make a difference, either way. Like it or not, that is the truth!
